It’s more than just preparing for the exams -- its a life management program! I knew CADC Prep would include learning the 12-Core Functions and Global Criteria. But 2 months later I found myself more aware and in-tune to all of life’s influencing effects! Scott’s coaching helped me become more aware of my surroundings and achieve balance. I am renewed!

Twelve Core Functions of Alcohol and Drug Counseling PDF Print E-mail

The Case Presentation Method is based on Twelve Core Functions. Scores on the CPM are based on the Global Criteria for each Core Function. The counselor must be able to demonstrate competence by achieving a passing score on the Global Criteria in order to be certified. Although the Core Functions may overlap, depending on the nature of the counselor's practice, each represents a specific entity.

10 Strategies to Pass the Certification Exams for Alcohol and Drug Counselors PDF Print E-mail

Preparation

  1. Make sure you have the IC&RCs reading list for prospective Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors.
  2. Don't read each of the books one the list.  Instead use the index in each text to look up topics listed in Examination Content of the Candidate Guide.  This will save you time and focus your preparation.  Review the Case Presentation Method Candidate Guide.
  3. Make note of examples of the Global Criteria.  Don't worry about the Twelve Core Functions -- focus on the Global Criteria (these, after all are how the Twelve Core Functions are embodied).  On 3x5 note cards, write out the an example for each Global Criteria as it exists in your current work environment (or the environment where you worked with the client in your case).  I will be publishing a free worksheet for this via this website soon.
  4. Make a tape recording.  Use the index cards and make a tape recording of your responses -- with a friend who is willing to role pay the examiner and ask you the questions.  Listen to it while you drive to work.
  5. Practice live!  Practice sessions -- along with a stop watch to record your time -- without your notes -- just a sheet with the 12 Core Functions and Global Criteria -- is essential to a smooth presentation.

On exam day

  1. It is important to arrive relaxed and confident.  Don't practice at the last minute.  You will only find anxiety and your presentation will suffer.
  2. Remember the examiners are trained to give you no responses.  Don't expect any.
  3. Number your answers.  As you answer each Core Function question posed to you by the examiners, go through the Global Criteria in order and number each of your responses (1-46 for each of the Global Criteria).
  4. Always say "for example."  This will flag your answer for the reviewer -- they will know when you are providing them with specifics.
  5. When you finish going through the Global Criteria in each section, always end with each section with "I'm done."  This alert the reviewer that you are ready for the next Core Function Question.  This simple step in efficient communication will save you at least 3 minutes in time!
